A must have in your medicine cabinet

Hello everyone,

First of all, I'd like to wish you a happy 2018. I wish you success in everything you do, health and wisdom.

Now back to the subject that interests us.

Have you ever heard about GSE?

Kesako?

GSE is commonly known as Grapefruit Seed Extract in the natural remedy/phytotherapeutics jargon. It is a substance derived from the seeds and peels of grapefruit.

"Researchers are discovering the power of grapefruit seeds, which provide safe and inexpensive raw materials to support a quiet revolution in the way holistically minded physicians and consumers approach problematic germs. From Candida to traveler's illness, sore throat, gum disease, flus, colds and the beyond, Grapefruit Seed Extract is earning a reputation as the most versatile mainstay of herbalists around the world - a breakthrough in alternative treatment." (Extract from the Authoritative Guide to Grapefruit Seed Extract from the Dr. Allan Sachs)

The versatile side of the product seduced me as I am in the process of adopting a slower consumption life.

"Used as a broad-spectrum, non-toxic, antimicrobial product, it is known to be highly effective for fighting infection and promoting health. GSE is used as a purifier, antiseptic, and preservative." (sourced from the Applied Health website).

And I will add, it is a natural antibiotic!

Disclaimer

I have no medical education; I am simply a mother who cares about the obscene amount of allopathic medicine we take for anything. The medical body has surely its responsibilities – a special dedication to the antibiotics here ;-) I am a firm believer that a healthy body goes hand in hand with a healthy diet.

So I am not going to tell you how to take GSE as daily intake dose depends on the concentration of the product you have on hands or planning to buy. Always refer to the manufacturer’s posology and method of administration.

And I encourage you to educate yourself and not take my words here as proof. You will find at the end of this post some websites and articles you may find resourceful to make your own opinion.

I can just advise you to favor the liquid concentrate over the capsules as the concentration of GSE is higher and the bottle will last you longer.

How long I have been using it

I started taking GSE in summer 2013 when we were living in China. I was desperate to treat a kind of eczema I develop on my feet whenever I go through an intense period of stress. Nothing would help to ease the itchiness. My in-laws were coming to visit us and I wanted them to bring some stuff for me. As I was surfing on the Internet, I came across someone describing his problem, exactly the same symptoms like mines. As it was a non-toxic product with barely any side effects, I told myself it wouldn’t harm me if I give it a try. Let me spare you the cries of delight and go to the point, it worked! And it worked very efficiently!

I personally use the German brand, CitroBiotic®. It is an organically certified brand. I am quite skeptical when it comes to American brands of any supplements or medicinal OTC drugs, as they are less regulated than in Europe - no judgment, just facts. So I have absolutely no experience with any American brands you may find on Google.

Though I must say that the guy working at my local organis store told me he gargles with the NutrBiotic drops that is sold to wash your fruits and veggies whenever he suffers from sore throat and he said it works perfectly.

I like this brand because, well Deutsche Qualitaet… It is highly concentrated, aka 83% of pure GSE, with some water and ascorbic acid. In comparison, the American Brand NutriBiotic only contains 33% of GSE.

What I use it for

First thing first, is it necessary that I remind you I live out of France so I have to learn how to use it sparingly? The bottle is mainly for my little ones to boost their immune system. Once a year, usually in September/October when the season changes and the virus are in the air. They take few drops in their morning freshly squeezed orange juice for six weeks.

How many drops do I give them?

The posology is calculated upon the weight of the child divided by 3. My eldest weights 17kg so I give her 6 drops (yes, yes I rounded up).

In case of sickness though, I reiterate two more times a day. For instance, last week my daughter wanted ABSOLUTELY to wear her summer strappy dress while the weather forecast announced a dramatic temperature decrease. Guess who ended up sick???
I gave her 6 drops 3 times a day for the time she was sick and recovering. In addition to rubbing her chest and upper back with 3 drops of carrier vegetable oil and 2 drops of ravintsara essential oil. Now she is back to school and me back to my tasks!
GSE can be administered starting from 6mo according to some sources.

When I am like agonising from a sore throat, I would take 15 drops (as per the posology of the brand I use) in some water and use them as a gargle and then swallow it, 3 times a day (hey, it’s processing in my mouth with my own mouth water and bacteria so there is nothing gross here J)

In Mexico, I read that it is recommended to deworm once/twice a year. If you take the GSE, you actually don’t need to take any pill that would literally destroy your gut flora. GSE is also known for its anti-parasite property.

Drug interaction?

While the interaction between some medical drugs (inhibiting the drug efficiency or exasperating its side effects) and grapefruit consumption is related, no study has proved that GSE can interact with any on-going allopathic treatment.

However

While no evidence of a possible tolerance built up on GSE has been proven, it is preferable to respect a therapeutic window. Like, either take it as a seasonal cure for 6 weeks straight. Or if you want to take it all year long, it is better to stop it for a week every month.
